Shades of Blue and Red lyrics

Crossing the water on your way to me
Talking about all the things that we've seen
And all of the thoughts that float round in our heads
Oh, it's shades of blue and red

Haven't seen you in a year and a day
One week is too long for you to be away
So much to catch up on, so much that's been said, oh
Oh, it's shades of blue and red

We were just kids when you said it was love
That hell couldn't stop us, nor heaven above
We'd be together long after we're dead, oh
It's shades of blue and red

Time brought its trials and we bore it strong
When pain wrote a melody, we sang along
It wasn't all heartache and wasn't all dread
It was shades of blue and red

It shot me to pieces when you hit the road
Like you accessed my heart without cracking my code
With a precision pin prick, like water it bled out
Shades of blue and red

Don't think you meant to hit me in the heart
When you scrapped my soul and sold me for parts
I'll always forgive you, I'll never forget
Your shades of blue and red

Write me a poem, I'll sing you a song
You play guitar, I'll ring the gong
To signal the end of a scene that was set
In your shades of blue and red

When you love somebody more than to breathe
And the look in their eyes centers your gravity
You don't care about all the rumors that spread
Oh, shades of blue and red

Together again is forever to me
Your tender touch cures all of my maladies
We've been apart, we're together again, oh it's
Shades of blue and red
Shades of blue and red
Shades of blue and red

writing it

I remember a story my mom told me when I was a kid about a guy in our hometown. His wife left him and their two kids to travel cross country with a motorcycle gang for a year. When she eventually came back and asked for forgiveness, he welcomed her back with open arms. I don't know if that story is true or exaggerated or spot on accurate, but I do know how it makes me feel. Shades of Blue and Red is about that story.

recording it

This was originally a demo I recorded two years before deciding to record the rest of the album. I had some time off work, bought a couple of SM57 mics, and recorded some songs.
